#DOEK ON FLEEK

The doek on fleek was formed when Nontobeko Sibisi's footage was of her wearing a doek was taken off air. Fleek means "cool". This incident led to media outcry, when women posted pictures wearing their doeks in support of her. This has since been the latest trend. Nowadays women wear headscarf for going out,it can be a wedding, funeral and even when going out for a date.
Few months after the incident, the#DOEK ON FLEEK organisation was formed by Thandi Mavata and Lusiwe Mlambo. In an interrview they mentioned that they were influenced by Nontobeko's story and that's the reason they formed the organisation. The incident really caused quite a stir as now many women wear the doek and embrace it.

The idea of wearing a headscarf took off to galvanize women around a garment many of us have known our whole lives. It is a crown we need to embrace and wear it with confidence. You can wear it the way you like and it fits perfectly with any outfit. It serves as a hot accessory, meaning it suits every outfit it can be a jean or a dress.
Many wear them, from local celebrities such as Bonang Matheba, Nomzamo Mbatha and Nhlanhla Nciza from Mafikizolo to international super stars Beyonce and Rihanna.

"Queening" in a beautifully wrapped headgear is a must for celebrating your cultural roots and black pride. International fashion events have been dominated by models strutting the catwalks in impressive headwraps.

Wearing a doek gives an African woman a layer of confidence and strength. The headpiece is also associated with being an important expression of your heritage and it's always fitting to grace traditional events wearing one.
On the other hand, we all have bad hair days, and to keep it hidden away we just bring out the doek as our fashion piece or statement, making it a fashion convenience as well.
